ABOUT AAFT

The Asian Academy of Family Therapy (AAFT) is a professional body dedicated to the development of family therapy in Asia. A charitable and non-profit organization, AAFT was established as the HKU Family Institute (HKUFI) in 2003 with the mission to enhance clinical training, practice, and research to meet the community’s increasing demand for high quality family intervention. To reflect the interest of family therapists in the Asian region, the Academy of Family Therapy officially changed its name to the Asian Academy of Family Therapy in 2015. In 2020, the AAFT received funding from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and established the first family therapy center in Hong Kong, the Jockey Club Family Therapy Center.

AAFT is membership based and we currently have 200 members and affiliates from Asia and abroad who are connected to the profession internationally. Our members are dedicated to the development of family health.

Each year we host an annual conference to be held in different regions. So far, seven conferences have taken place in Japan, Taiwan, Shanghai, Seoul, and Singapore. The 8th annual conference will be held in Hong Kong in October 2023 and the theme is Reconnecting Families and Family Therapy Communities. The conference will involve important key figures in Asia as well as renowned experts in the field from Asia, Europe and the United States. We are hoping to take this opportunity to introduce Hong Kong to our international audience. We also hope to promote the profession as well as each region’s unique geographical and cultural specialty.
